Extraction

The pulling off of tooth. 拔牙. The nightmare of many people.

Actually I wanted to make a post about this long time ago since last year after I extracted my wisdom teeth. Lazy mah…

Currently posted in surgery, at first I don’t like surgery but as of now, I’m liking it already because the cases can be finished so fast, LOL. Imagine in ODS you have to drill, show teacher, isolate, mix cement, isolate even more, put cement base, isolate again, mix amalgam, isolate the goddamn saliva – we are not using any suction FYI, condense the amalgam, carve, then show teacher. I haven’t talked about RCT yet.

Extraction? Inject, wait a bit, separate the gums from tooth, put forceps in and then PULL, then some screaming, then after it’s out put cotton in socket and show teacher. That’s all. Simple isn’t it?

Injection

So the very first step in extracting is injection.

All this while I’ve only known what a local anesthesia is but have never felt it, until that day I went for extraction of my impacted wisdom teeth.

It made the procedure painless but I must say it feels weird.

In my opinion, a successful injection means half of the extraction procedure is done.

One more thing, if the dentist angulates your position until you can’t see what he’s doing in your mouth, don’t be so kepoh and struggle to look at what he’s doing, just let him do it with your mouth opened, and when there’s pain, bear it. Trust me, it’s better if you don’t see the instruments. LOL.

After the anesthesia starts working, the next procedure will be elevation.

Elevation

By using some instruments-you-don’t-want-to-know, the gums holding the tooth will be peeled off from the tooth so that it’s not injured when pulling the tooth.

In some cases, due to the wedging and lever action of the elevator, the tooth get’s loosened where one will feel that something is torn in the tooth socket, which is the main purpose of doing elevation – to facilitate its delivery later by using forceps.

Extraction

So here comes the main thing, the extraction.

Nothing big here, but just applying the forceps and pulling the tooth out.

Seriously if you can bear the fear of injection, this part is nothing.

And here are something to remember if you ever undergone extraction:

  • Bite tightly on the cotton for at least 1 hour, unless you want to see some bleeding coming out from your mouth like you’ve drunk poison
  • Don’t spit, swallow the saliva and blood
  • Don’t play the extracted socket with tongue
  • Don’t take hot food, cold food or drinks is welcomed – take lots of ice creams, like my dentist told me
  • Take the medications

That’s all, have a nice and safe extraction – if you ever need one. Hope that this post will reduce your fear towards extraction.
